Belfast Worker Terrified As Robber Threatens To Throw Acid In Her Face

A shop worker in north Belfast was left terrified after a would-be robber threatened to throw acid in her face if she didn't hand over cash.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the attempted armed robbery of a shop on Oldpark Road at around 7.15pm on Saturday 05 January.

The culprit, who spoke with a southern accent and is believed to be in his 30's, entered the shop and demanded the woman hand over money from the cash register while holding a plastic bottle filled with clear liquid and threatening to cover her in acid.

The woman attempted to fight him off by throwing items at him.

He made off after being startled by the shop's alarm which was raised when a panic button was triggered.

North Belfast Sinn Fein Councillor JJ Magee has condemned the attempted robbery. He said: "I have been speaking to the shop staff and this was an extremely worrying incident and undoubtedly traumatic for the shop assistant who was threatened.

"The man threatened her with a bottle that he claimed contained acid and she showed incredible bravery to throw items at him, forcing him to flee empty-handed.

"Obviously this attempted robbery is to be condemned and I would urge anyone with information about the assailant to bring it to the PSNI."
