Masked Gang Attack Mum In L'Derry

Masked men have attacked a woman with a hammer while ransacking her home in L'Derry on Thursday night.

Three young children were inside the Bloomfield Park house, in the Galliagh area of the city, when the incident occurred at around 10.45pm on 26 September.

Three men forced their way inside, with two carrying out the assault while a third smashed windows and mirrors. Police said the victim was punched, slapped, and hit around the legs with a hammer.

She was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

"While enquiries are at an early stage, this has all the makings of a paramilitary-style attack," Detective Inspector Michael Winters said.

"This was a violent attack on a female. Furthermore, her three young children were home at the time. And, while physically uninjured, they have been left badly shaken. It was a traumatic ordeal, which no family should ever have to experience."

Anyone with information, or who noticed any suspicious activity in the area around that time, is asked to come forward. Detectives can be contacted on 101 quoting reference number 2114 of 26/09/19.

Alternatively, details can be passed to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
