High Winds Expected As Storm Lorenzo Reaches NI

Traffic disruption is expected this afternoon as Storm Lorenzo batters Northern Ireland.

Winds are set to pick up at around 3pm on Thursday, with a yellow weather warning in place throughout the evening.

"A spell of strong south-easterly winds may bring some transport disruption later on Thursday," the Met Office said.

Gusts of up to 60mph are expected, with the alert in place from 3pm to 10pm.

Delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, with some coastal routes and exposed communities to be affected by spray and large waves.

Short term loss of power and other services is also possible, forecasters have advised.

Preparations appear more intense in the Republic of Ireland as a Status Orange warning covers the western counties of Galway, Mayo, Clare, Kerry and Limerick, where the strongest winds are expected.

Storm Lorenzo battered Southern Europe with gales of up to 105 mph on Wednesday, however much of its power is due to have diminished when it reaches Northern Ireland.
