Match Postponed As Linfield Player Contracts Coronavirus

Linfield's next fixture has been postponed after a player tested positive for coronavirus.

The club was due to play Larne in a Danske Bank Premiership match this Saturday, however officials say the match will no longer go ahead.

This follows an announcement on Tuesday that the footballer had contracted the virus. He is now self-isolating.

Windsor Park closed for a deep clean on Wednesday and Thursday in a bid to halt any further spread of the flu-like infection.

Speaking on Tuesday, Linfield FC chairman Roy McGivern said the health and wellbeing of both players and staff takes priority.

"Very unpleasant news that one of our players has tested positive for Covid-19. The priority now is to look after the welfare of our players and staff.

"Issues around football will be addressed in due course," he shared on Twitter.

A statement released on Wednesday confirmed that the fixture will no longer go ahead. No new date has been scheduled as yet.

A spokesperson for the club said: "Officials from the NI Football League will continue to communicate regularly with clubs and review the ongoing situation alongside the response group set up by the Irish Football Association."

The Linfield office and Superstore has also closed for the rest of the week.
