Driver Arrested On Suspicion Of Drug Driving And Speeding
A 41-year-old man has been arrested in L'Derry following a road safety operation conducted by police on Wednesday, 16th April.
Shortly after 9:00 PM, officers from the Derry City and Strabane District Support Team, who were carrying out Operation Lifesaver patrols targeting speeding on the Springtown Road, detected a car travelling in excess of the 30mph speed limit.
Upon stopping the vehicle and speaking with the driver, officers detected a strong smell of cannabis emanating from inside. A subsequent search of the car led to the discovery of a quantity of suspected cannabis and drug paraphernalia. A preliminary roadside drug test using a drug-driving detection kit indicated the presence of cannabis, resulting in the driver's arrest. The 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of offences including driving whilst unfit through drugs, driving with excess speed, possession of a Class B controlled drug, and possession of a Class B controlled drug with intent to supply. He remains in police custody at this time.
Sergeant Moore commented on the incident: "This drug-related detection was made by officers who were conducting a road safety operation. We know that drugs is an issue of concern in the community and we are working hard to disrupt and prevent those involved in drug-related activity and who bring nothing but harm to the most vulnerable within our communities. We're grateful for the support of local people, and I'm keen to reiterate our appeal for anyone with information, or concerns, to get in touch on 101 or submit a report online via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport"
Sergeant Moore also encouraged the public to share information anonymously with Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
