Hargey Condemns Alleged Racist Assault On Migrant
Sinn Féin MLA Deidre Hargey has said there is "no place for racism or hate in society" after the PSNI confirmed they are investigating an alleged assault on a migrant linked to vigilante groups in South Belfast. The South Belfast MLA said that racism, violence, and intimidation are "unacceptable, wrong and it must stop immediately."
Hargey stated that these so-called vigilante groups "do not represent our society" and that political leaders have a responsibility to stand with the victims of this intimidation and violence. She has written to the Justice Minister offering to work alongside her and the police to ensure those responsible are held to account. Hargey also called on anyone with information to contact the police.
Police Appeal for Information Following West Belfast Burglaries
Detectives are appealing for information following two aggravated burglaries in the Mount Eagles Avenue area of west Belfast in the early hours of Wednesday, 13 August. In the first incident at around 5.50am, a man armed with two knives gained entry to a flat through a window and stole two mobile phones after threatening the male occupant. Police were made aware of a second burglary at a nearby property, where a mobile phone and keys were stolen after entry was gained through an open window. No one was physically injured in either incident, though occupants were left shaken. Police are treating both burglaries as linked.
Chief Inspector Claire Hamilton has appealed for anyone with information, dashcam, or CCTV footage to contact police on 101, quoting reference 227 of 13/8/25. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
£220,000 Road Resurfacing Scheme To Begin On L'Derry
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £220,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the U1512 Rock Road, L'Derry, will commence on Monday, 25 August 2025. The work, which will extend along the entire length of Rock Road, is expected to be completed by Friday, 29 August, subject to favourable weather conditions.
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, a road closure will be in place from 8am to 6pm each day between the 25 and 29 of August. Diversionary routes will be signed and motorists are advised to expect some delays and allow for additional time when travelling.
Minister Kimmins said the investment will "deliver significant benefits for residents and road users" and thanked them for their patience while the "essential infrastructure work is carried out."

Man Charged With Murder And Attempted Murder In Downpatrick
A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder following the death of Stephen Brannigan and the serious assault of a priest in Downpatrick on Sunday, 10 August. The body of 56-year-old Mr Brannigan was discovered at a house in the Marian Park area of the town. On the same day, a priest was seriously assaulted at St Patrick's Church.

Permission was given for a new 164-bedroom hotel, which will include a ground floor bar and restaurant, by applicant Andras House at the junction of Botanic Avenue and Donegall Pass.
