Taoiseach tells Dáil of plan to release McCabe's killers
Four men jailed in connection with the killing of Garda Gerry McCabe will be freed on early release if there is a settlement agreed in the Northern Ireland political process.
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, told the Irish parliament today that he would recommend freeing the four men when a deal was reached in Northern Ireland.
Four men were convicted of the manslaughter of Garda McCabe who was shot during a robbery in the picturesque County Limerick village of Adare in 1996. A second Garda Ben O'Sullivan was wounded in the same incident.
Mr Ahern said that as part of a "comprehensive agreement" in relation to the Northern Ireland peace process the government was prepared to consider the early release of the four men. The release would not be under the early prisoner release provisions contained in the Good Friday Agreement, but under previous legislation.
The Taoiseach said that consultation with Garda McCabe's family and representatives of the Garda Siochana would have to take place.
The IRA initially denied involvement in the 1996 shooting of Garda McCabe, but four republicans were subsequently convicted on manslaughter charges. A fifth man convicted on robbery charges has since been released after serving his sentence.

Four Arrested Following Disorder In South Belfast
Four men have been arrested following public disorder incidents in the university area of south Belfast on Thursday, November 14th. Police responded to a number of offences, including resisting and obstructing police, and assault on police. Three men, aged 18, 20, and 21, have been charged and are due to appear in court in December.

Garda release two men without charge
Two men who were arrested by Gardai on Sunday in connection with the Omagh bomb investigation have been released from Carrickmacross Garda station. The two men, who are believed to be in their 20s and from County Armagh and County Monaghan, were released without charge on Monday night.
