Teenage girl attacked in north Belfast
Police are appealing for information after a teenage girl was attacked in north Belfast last night.
Laura Cleary, 15, was punched to the ground and knocked unconscious whilst walking to her Serpentine Road home with a friend shortly after 10pm.
It is believed that occupants of a car had hurled abuse at Laura and her friend, before getting out and attacking the girls. While her friend was able to escape and raise the alarm, Laura was punched to the ground and then kicked in the ribs.
Sinn Fein Councillor for North Belfast, David Kennedy said the attack was clearly sectarian.
"This attack was an act of cowardice,” Mr Kennedy said. “Those responsible picked a very easy target and attacked two vulnerable teenage girls. The girls were walking home tonight when a car stopped and those inside got out and beat one of the girls unconscious.
“Her friend was lucky enough to escape and call for help but she is also, as can only be expected, very shaken.
The victim was treated in hospital for her injuries but is now recovering at home.
