Investigation to begin into possible contamination

Environment Minister Angela Smith has confirmed that investigations are to begin into allegations that around 200 homes in Co Antrim may have been built near contaminated land on the site of a former textiles factory.

The Minister said she was informed of the possibility of contamination on the land at the old Courtaulds site in Carrickfergus last December by Akzo Nobel, the company which acquired the site in 1998.

The houses involved were built in the early 1990s after the factory closed. Before building took place the land was checked for industrial contamination and was found to be clear of problems.

Mr Smith said householders in the area would be informed of the situation during the investigation.

Town mayor, David Hilditch, meanwhile, said the council had already written to residents in the areas affected.

"Everybody is going to work together including myself, my fellow councillors and the officials, for the well-being of the residents of Carrick,” he added.
