EIC forced to close following refusal of DOE funding

Six jobs will be lost in the closure of The Environmental Information Centre (EIC) in Ballymena following a refusal by the Department of the Environment (DOE) to continue to fund its activities.

EIC Director Neil Alldred is shocked at the decision not to renew funding.

He said: “This has come as a devastating blow and we cannot understand the reasoning behind it. We have delivered on everything we set out to do and have been working closely and – we were led to believe - effectively with the DoE.

"When we were established, the DoE, argued that an environmental information service was not an essential public service and insisted that the EIC be established as a charity. Now that that charity is up and running and offering a service widely recognised as excellent, the DoE has decided to reverse its earlier decisions and to refuse even one penny of public funds to the future running costs of the EIC. Perhaps we should have seen the writing on the wall right from the outset, but we believed that the DoE was fully committed to providing the public with easily accessible information on environmental issues.”

The EIC, which is located in the ECOS centre, is to close its doors on 23rd April.
