SDLP delegation to discuss loyalist violence with Minister
SDLP North Antrim MLA Sean Farren has said the activities of loyalist paramilitaries presents a threat to a new generation and “requires a new response”.
Mr Farren was speaking ahead of a meeting with NIO Minister Lord Rooker concerning the recent ongoing loyalist feud between the UVF and LVF as well as attacks on Catholic homes in Ahoghill.
“Loyalists have been responsible for most murders and violence not just this year but for many years now,” Mr Farren. “At the same time most loyalist politicians are showing less and less interest in politics. The UDA wound up its own political party and has showing contempt for the democratic path forward.
“Unionist politicians seem more concerned when loyalists turn their guns on each other than when they attack catholic homes. The Secretary of State refuses to admit that the UVF ceasefire is non-existent. Meanwhile nobody has been devising a clear strategy for dealing with loyalist terror.”
Mr Farren said the SDLP had proposed a six-point plan for dealing with loyalist terror which involved deactivating loyalist informers involved in serious crime as well as ending any immunity for such informers.
Friday’s SDLP delegation to meet with Lord Rooker will include South Belfast MP Alasdair McDonnell, Declan O'Loan and Alex Attwood.
