DUP hit out at SF Shankill comments
The DUP have hit out at Sinn Fein over comments made by party president Gerry Adams about future funding for the Shankill Road area of the city.
Speaking on Wednesday following a meeting with NIO Minister David Hanson, Mr Adams said he had raised concerns that the approach "currently being taken by the government in respect of the Shankill area is unlikely to see any substantial progress in the socio-economic conditions of people living there".
"Any agenda for regeneration and reconstruction needs to be consistent with the Good Friday Agreement and should ensure that areas are targeted on the basis of objective social need," he said.
However, West Belfast DUP MLA Diane Dodds accused Mr Adams of a "blatant and desperate attempt to prevent the Government from addressing the deprivation in loyalist and unionist areas".
"Sinn Fein are now running to Ministers like David Hanson because they see the work being done by the DUP and others to focus attention on the needs of the loyalist and unionist communities across a range of issues," Mrs Dodds said.
"Sinn Fein's statement demonstrates the true nature of the Sinn Fein/IRA organisation which is inherently sectarian. At a time when the government is being shown the true extent of the deprivation in unionist and Protestant working class areas, Sinn Fein is busy expressing fears about the government actually starting to address the issues affecting these areas."
Last month, Mr Hanson visited the Shankill area saying a prosperous Northern Ireland could only be achieved when deprived areas, such as the Shankill, experienced real benefits.
His visit was part of his ongoing engagement with elected representatives and community leaders, particularly those from loyalist and unionist communities.
