Footballer threatened with gun at match

A football player has been threatened at gunpoint during a match in Coleraine on Saturday afternoon.

The match was just about to begin when a masked man, armed with a handgun, ran onto the pitch and threatened the player, who is also a Sinn Fein activist.

The player, who has not been named, managed to flag down a car and escape without injury.

Sinn Fein councillor, Billy Leonard, said that it is unknown if the gun was real or imitation, but onlookers heard the gunman mention the players name before he went onto the pitch.

Mr Leonard continued: "The message has got to be given loud and clear. There is no place for this in Coleraine."

SDLP Assemblyman for the area, John Dallat has expressed his anger at this type of incident at a football match and added that there is "no place in any civilised society for thugs roaming about with guns to defend democracy."

Mr Dallat urged witnesses to contact police with information and said that football had brought the people of Coleraine together, and this type of behaviour must not be allowed to destroy that.

The gunman is believed to be in his 20s, about 5ft 10ins tall and was wearing black clothing.
