Family pet killed during County Down burglary
A family pet has been killed during a break-in at a house in County Down in the early hours of this morning.
Thieves are reported to have entered the house in Greenan Court in Loughbrickland at around 2am and stole a lady's handbag and a set of car keys before making off in a red Toyota Corolla, which was parked outside.
During their escape, the robbers ran over the family's West Highland terrier dog and then drove off, leaving the animal to die in the street.
The car was recovered some time later; a short distance from the house and the handbag was recovered by a member of the public who returned it to the owner.
A police spokesperson said that detectives wished to thank the "Good Samaritan" for returning the bag and have urged them to contact police as they may have vital information, which may be important to the investigation.
They have also appealed for anyone who may have witnessed anything in connection with the incident or know the identity of those involved, to contact them on 02840 662222 or 0845 600 8000.
Detectives can also be contacted anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
