Ballymena Council opens book of condolence

Ballymena Borough Council has voted to open a book of condolence for murdered schoolboy Michael McIlveen.

At a meeting last night the councillors agreed to open the book, which has already been signed by the town's Democratic Unionist party mayor Tommy Nicholl and a number of other councillors.

The 15-year-old schoolboy was beaten in Garfield Place near Ballymena town centre at the weekend. He later died in hospital.

Five teenagers were yesterday remanded in custody charged with murder.

Two other youths arrested earlier this week are still being questioned by police.

CCTV footage is being examined by detectives as the investigation proceeds.

Sinn Fein have moved to call off a number of hunger strike commemoration events due to be held over the weekend in a bid to reduce community tensions in the town and district.

Among the first items likely to be on the agenda for the Northern Ireland Assembly, which is due to sit next week, will be a request for MLA's to hold a minute's silence.
