Man given 10-years for 'torturing' victim

A 60-year-old County Antrim man who "tortured" his former partner, has been given a ten-year jail sentence by Ballymena Crown Court.

John Orr, from Tober Park in Cullybackey, admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court heard that Orr stabbed his 55-year-old victim 44-times with a carving fork, "torturing and threatening" to kill her in July 2005.

The woman eventually escaped when her attacker fell into a drunken sleep.

Orr was originally charged with attempted murder, however this was dropped after he admitted to wounding with intent to cause GBH.

A prosecution lawyer told the judge that although the woman's physical wounds had healed, she had been left so traumatised that she was unable to return home and now resides in a women's refuge.

Orr's lawyer responded by saying that he wished to publicly apologise to his victim.

He was given a ten-year sentence, two of which will be served on probation.
