Man appears in court on assault charges
A man has appeared in court today charged with the abduction and assault of a couple in Londonderry.
Marvin Canning, aged 45 from Glendara in the Brandywell area, has been charged in relation to an incident in High Park in the Creggan area of Londonderry on Tuesday.
He is the brother-in-law of Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness.
Canning has denied charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
A man and woman, named as Brendan Cranston, 42, and Linda Doherty, 38 had allegedly been abducted then assaulted. Both were understood to have suffered from “extensive injuries” while the man was shot in both ankles.
They had been taken from their home in Mullingar between 8:00pm and 9:00pm on Monday evening and driven more than 120 miles.
The accused was remanded in custody until 24 May.

The man is accused of assault causing harm, coercive control, contravention of a safety order, theft, and possession of a weapon. The alleged offences occurred in the Monaghan area between 2020 and 2021.

A Londonderry man has been jailed for 11 years after being found guilty of a series of sex charges against teenage girls. The 43-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at Londonderry Crown Court today after being found guilty of 31 offences included two charges of raping his daughter.
