Belfast Man Drowns As He Saves Granddaughter
A Belfast man who died last Sunday, after he laid down his life to save his 18-month-old granddaughter from drowning, has today been praised as a hero by his son.
Edward Moore, 43, who lived in Southampton but was originally from Belfast, held his granddaughter Keeley above his head as the tide raced over them at Lepe Beach near Calshot, Hampshire last Sunday.
Mr Moore had spent too long beneath the water as he held Keeley up to be rescued, and the incident was witnessed by many of Mr Moore's family as the party got into difficulties.
Keeley was rescued unharmed, but although Mr Moore was airlifted to hospital, he later died.
Mr Moore’s son Tony, who is Keeley’s father, said that he had died for his family and they were all very proud of what he did, and that he had died a hero.
Police said that the death on the beach was being treated as a tragic accident.
