Seniors Warned Over Bogus Callers
An pre-Christmas initiative has been launched to raise awareness among senior citizens of the very real danger of bogus callers.
The free Safe Seniors pack is available to everyone living in Belfast aged over 65 and is intended as a reminder for older people to take care about their own personal security.
“It reminds older people to make sure to ask for official identification before allowing someone into the home. A genuine caller will not be offended by this request – it is only the thief and the villain who will be caught out,” said Councillor Robin Newton, MLA, who welcomed the announcement.
The pack, which was launched today, at an event in Belmont Tower in the east of the city, came about as a result of the work of the Belfast District Policing Partnership, East Belfast Sub-Group.
“Last Christmas and New Year there was genuine fear amongst the older generation following a spate of burglaries, some of which involved violence towards the residents?
“As a local MLA and the Chairman of the DPP East Belfast Sub-Group at the time, I felt that we had to take some action and I called a public meeting of the Sub-Group which was attended by a range of organisations and individuals.”
He explained that the outcome of this meeting was the establishment of a partnership arrangement with Belfast City Council, The Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Community Safety Unit of the Northern Ireland Office which has resulted in the provision of free Safe Seniors packs.
Councillor Newton continued: “I hope that this initiative will go some way to reassuring the older citizens of the city that they are safe in their own homes.
“It reminds our senior citizens to be careful about their own personal security. For example, it suggests they make sure to ask for official identification before bringing someone into their house.”

Elderly and vulnerable residents in the Ballymoney area are being targeted by cold callers requesting that they hand over any new £5 notes. A man and woman claiming to be from the government are asking residents to return all notes to them as they are no longer of legal tender.

Positive Ageing Month Kicks Off In Belfast
Hundreds of senior citizens visited Belfast City Hall yesterday to kick off Positive Ageing Month at the 2019 Age-friendly Convention. The contribution made by the city's older citizens will be celebrated throughout the month with over 200 events, classes, workshops and activities to take place in various venues.
