Drug Addiction Falls
The number of class-A drug addicts has fallen in the last year according to figures released today.
There are 31 fewer addicts in Northern Ireland compared to last year, with the figure now standing at 257 people officially registered as addicts.
Over 75% of the addicts are addicted to heroin, with the remainder identifying substances such as methadone and cocaine. However, it is understood a large percentage of Northern Ireland's drug addicts are not registered as addicts, leaving a hole in the statistics.
Despite the fall in the number of addicts registered, the director of a drug abuse service in Belfast's Shankill Road said there was still a significant addiction problem in the north.
Ann Bill from the Forum Against Substance and Alcohol Abuse (FASA), which is based on the Shankill, said the majority of people with drug problems still did not seek treatment.
"These statistics are talking about people who present for treatment through the drug misuse database," she said.
"But if you go on what we know on the street and the people we work with, drug use is on the rise."
