Belfast folk urged to put their best foot forward
The people of Belfast are being invited to take the first steps toward a healthier and more active lifestyle by putting their best foot forward during the annual Belfast Week of Walking.
The week, which takes place between September 7 and 15, features a diverse programme of walking events to suit all ages and fitness levels.
Events planned for the week include: Walk To Work Day; Walk To School Day; Rainbow Walks for schools in Belfast City Council parks; the Belfast Classic Golf Challenge; City Centre tours; pub walking tours; country park hikes; Toddle Waddle to encourage junior walkers; and free access to treadmills in Belfast City leisure centres for senior citizens.

The Belfast Week of Walking is part of the World Health Organisation Healthy Cities European Multi-Action Plan for Active Living and aims to promote physical activity as a way of daily life, in order to improve health and promote a sense of physical and mental wellbeing.
Other Active Living Weeks organised by Belfast City Council and the Belfast Active Living Group this year have covered swimming, dance and cycling.

Initial feedback on the commercial impact of Belfast shops being open over the traditional 'Twelfth' celebration has been excellent. This year's event, titled 'Orangefest' on 13 July witnessed Belfast city centre shops opening on the day of the parades for the first time.
