Dissidents Extending 'Operational Area', After Lisburn Murder Bid
Dissident republicans are extending their terrorist campaign across the Province, according to DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson.
Mr Donaldson was speaking after a failed bomb bid in Lisburn earlier this week.
The PSNI has said it is treating the attack as an attempt to kill a police officer, despite the target being the victim of mistaken identity.
Stormont Junior Minister, Mr Donaldson, said the 50-year-old woman had a lucky escape after discovering the device under her car.
He said: "A lot of their attacks have occurred in the west of the province recently,
"This now brings it into the Lisburn area so it's clear the dissidents are extending their areas of operation."
Mr Donaldson said he believes the PSNI is well placed to combat dissident activity, but warned gaps in intelligence do occur.
Police have described the device as a "viable pipe bomb".
The officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Jeff Smyth, said: "The actions of this terrorist grouping may have led to very, very serious injury or loss of life.
"As a member of the police service, I want to reassure the public that we're doing everything we can to protect them.
"And in instances like this, we will endeavour to a great extent to bring those responsible to justice."
Mr Smyth stressed the woman had no connections with the police service.
Security Minister Paul Goggins condemned the perpetrators.
"Anyone who knows anything about those who carried out this attack cannot, in all conscience, remain silent in the face of this murderous insanity," he said.
Police want to speak to the owner of a white Vauxhall Corsa car, parked at Lambeg Parish Church from Monday evening until Tuesday morning.
They say a teenager wearing a baseball cap was in the vehicle.
They also want to speak to a man wearing a high visibility jacket who was also in the Ballyskeagh area.
