Arrests Follow Taxi Driver Assault

Three people have now been arrested in connection with the serious assault on a Bangor man close to Belfast city centre at the weekend.

Jeremy Mooney, 41, a taxi driver, remains critically ill in hospital after the unprovoked assault on Friday night at Sussex Place.

The man and two women were arrested last night, and although the two women have since been released on bail, the man remains in custody.

Two other men are also still being questioned in connection with the incident.

Sinn Fein South Belfast MLA and NI Policing Board member, Alex Maskey has condemned the assault.

"I was just absolutely disgusted when I heard the news and my heart goes out to them," he said.

"I hope the family takes some comfort from the fact that the people in our area are also disgusted with it. I would hope and I would expect that anybody who has any knowledge or information about it would bring it forward."

Meanwhile, a 29 year-old man has suffered a broken arm and leg after being attacked at his home in Carrickfergus.

It happened at Castlemara Drive just before 3am on Tuesday.

It is believed a number of people were involved in the attack.

The PSNI is investigating the assault and a motive for the attack is still being probed.

Detectives in the town have appealed to witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

In other news, a motorcyclist has been taken to hospital after a road crash in east Belfast.

The crash - on the Upper Braniel Road - involved two cars and a motorcycle and happened at around 11pm on Monday.
