Prospects are good for construction sector says CITB
New figures from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) have indicated that the construction industry is still buoyant and will continue to expand, fuelling demand for new jobs.
The 'CITB Skills Foresight Report 2002-2006' has revealed that throughout the UK, the construction industry will need to attract about 380,00 recruits over the next five years – or 76,000 a year – just to keep up with demand.
Hugh Try, Chairman of the CITB, said: "The construction industry already employed 1-in-14 of Britain's working population and these figures confirm that the trend for the expansion in the industry is set to continue in the long term. We're in a better position that ever to offer school leavers and graduates real job in an industry that is dynamic, exciting and has high levels of job satisfaction."
Of the 380,000 people required, 65,000 will be needed each year to replace existing manpower and an extra 11,000 will be needed to meet growth in demand owing to the large number of building and infrastructure projects planned in the UK.
To help attract prospective candidates, the CITB has run a series of youth focused advertising campaigns. It has also launched a new careers pack called 'Construction – A Career You Can Build On'.
The CITB hopes to plug the gaps in the industry by attracting graduates and offering training programmes for those eager to develop skills useful to the construction industry.
The CITB conference is to be held on Tuesday March 26, in London, and brings together leading industry figures including government ministers such as John Healey, Minister for Adults Skills.

The New Sector Skills Council For Construction
Charles Clarke, the Secretary for State for Education, has given the green light to the new sector skills council for the construction industry. Known as ConstructionSkills, the new SSC will comprise CITBGB in partnership with CITBNI (Northern Ireland) and CIC (Construction Industry Council).

Sean Campbell appointed as new CITB chairman
Sean Campbell has recently been appointed as the chairman of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in Northern Ireland. Currently the Company Secretary and Managing Director of H&P Campbell, Newry - a building and civil engineering contractor – Mr Campbell has been a member of CITB since 1993.
