Environment Minister announces major development in Newtownards
The Minister of the Environment, Dermot Nesbitt, has announced notice of opinion to grant planning permission for a major development involving significant investment in Newtownards.
The planning proposal, south of the town centre, includes a food superstore, retail warehousing and business parks.
Speaking on Friday 22 March, Mr Nesbitt said: “The development in Newtownards will make a major contribution to the regeneration of the town. This means that the ‘brownfield’ sites in the south of the town are being used to their full potential.
“Further, a new road bypassing Newtownards town centre is an integral part of the package. This will assist traffic movement around the town and bring considerable benefits in terms of reduction of traffic in Newtownards town centre and improvement in the environment for shoppers.”
Referring to the benefits for Northern Ireland as a whole, Mr Nesbitt said: “The major developments at Newtownards and as proposed at Belfast International Airport last week are very significant. They represent major investments in Northern Ireland, which will bring considerable benefits in terms of employment opportunities, improved facilities, and better roads.”
