More Snow Causes Problems

Fresh snow fall has hindered efforts to return to normality following last week's record cold snap across the UK.

More wintry showers have been forecast for parts of north-west England, the West Midlands and southern England.

Further transport problems have been reported, with several airports shutting completely, causing increased delays and flight cancellations.

Road networks are still widely affected, as the M48 old Severn Bridge among others remained closed today.

Hundreds of schools have shut throughout the UK, however, many opened their doors to allow GCSE, AS Level and A Level student sit modular exams.

BBC weather presenters today warned snow could fall and lie nationally.

Fears have heightened that local authorities are rapidly running out of grit supplies.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has moved to protect reserves, telling councils and the Highways Agency to "act decisively".

"If we did not act decisively, reserves would run down fast and essential roads would be at risk of closure if the freeze continues," he said.

Police constabularies across the UK have warned drivers of black ice, and urged them to take care on untreated roads.

Motorists have also been warned about increased pot holes as a result of the deep freeze.
