'Give Way' Alert

Two ground collisions have led to a change in the way air traffic controllers at Manchester Airport give instructions to pilots. Confusion led to taxiing planes colliding with aircraft involved in the two collisions in 2007 and 2008 being damaged, while none of the 468 passengers was hurt. The pilot of the Boeing 737, which struck the tail of a passing plane, said the words "give way" confused him. A report, by the Air Accident Investigations Branch, prompted the airport to withdraw the term. Instead, the pilot told investigators, air traffic controllers should use the phrase "hold position".

Mercy Midwife Sought Over Crash

Police in Fife have appealed for a midwife to contact them after she helped at the scene of a road crash where a man died. The emergency services were called to the A91 near Gateside following reports of a two-car accident on Wednesday morning. An 84-year-old man died at the scene of the collision. Police said they were "particularly keen" to speak to a midwife who assisted at the accident.

Swine Flu Closure

The National Pandemic Flu Service, set up to dispense drugs to patients in England without the need to see doctors, has closed down. The closure came after a sharp decline in the number of cases of the H1N1 swine flu virus. Health officials said the hotline and website could be restored in seven days should the situation change. But parents with young children are still being advised to have them immunised against the disease.
