Gunman's Ashes Scattered Near Rothbury
The ashes of 'fugitive' gunman Raoul Moat have been scattered by his family near the spot where he took his own life.
Moat died on July 10 in Rothbury following a six-hour stand-off with police. He had been on the run after shooting his former girlfriend, killing her new boyfriend and shooting a police officer.
According to reports, Moat's ashes were scattered in a river about five miles upstream from Rothbury in a private ceremony attended by family members, including his brother Angus.
The ceremony has reportedly been criticised by Rothbury residents.
Moat, 37, a former nightclub doorman, was released from Durham Prison on July 1, after serving a sentence for assault.
Two days later he shot and injured his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart, 22, and killed her new partner Chris Brown, 29, at a house in Birtley, Gateshead.
The following night, PC David Rathband, 42, was shot through the window of his police car in East Denton, near Newcastle. He was blinded in the attack.
Twenty-one people have been arrested in connection with the Moat investigation. Two men have appeared at Newcastle Crown Court charged with conspiracy to murder and possessing a firearm with intent.
