Action Promised Over Milly's Phone Hacking
The boss of News International has said the "strongest possible action" will be employed if claims that the phone of murder victim Milly Dowler was hacked.
It has been reported that a private investigator was hired to hack into Milly's voicemail while she was missing to give the News of the World access to associated 'storylines' for the paper.
Milly, 13, went missing while walking home from school on 21 March 2002 in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. Her body was found six months later in Hampshire.
Following a trial at the Old Bailey Levi Bellfield, 43, a former nightclub bouncer, was convicted of her murder.
In a statement, Rebekah Brooks said the News of the World hacking claims were "almost too horrific to believe".
She added: "I have to tell you that I am sickened that these events are alleged to have happened.
"Not just because I was editor of the News of the World at the time, but if the accusations are true, the devastating effect on Milly Dowler's family is unforgivable.
"I hope that you all realise it is inconceivable that I knew - or worse - sanctioned these appalling allegations."
