Royal British Legion Cuts Ties With NoW
Following revelations that the phones of murder victim Milly Dowler and bereaved military families were hacked, the Royal British Legion has suspended ties with the News of the World (NoW).
Gen Sir David Richards, the Charity Chief of the Defence Staff has described the claims as "disgusting".
Yesterday the Prime Minister promised a full investigation.
It is reported that the contact telephone numbers of families of service personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan were discovered in the office of private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was alleged hired by the News of the World.
A spokesman for the Royal British Legion said: "We can't with any conscience campaign alongside News of the World on behalf of armed forces families while it stands accused of preying on these same families in the lowest depths of their misery.
"The hacking allegations have shocked us to the core."
He added: "Clearly, it would make a mockery of that campaign to go hand-in-hand with News of the World. We think we'll do better without them."
News also broke today that Sainsbury's is also "suspending advertising in the News of the World until the outcome of the investigation".
Yesterday Rebekah Brooks, the boss of News International, has said the "strongest possible action" will be employed if claims that the phone of murder victim Milly Dowler was hacked.
