Pair Await Rescue In Pacific

A British man and a New Zealand woman are awaiting rescue in the Pacific Ocean.

The pair’s ship rolled on Wednesday about 700km (434 miles) south-west of Tonga and 1,260km north-east of New Zealand, according to the rescue team.

The yacht was damaged and has righted itself, but it has been reported that it is taking on water and could sink.

It is thought the 52-old-man and 43-year-old woman have not sustained serious injuries, but the man is reported to have hurt his back when the 11.6m (38ft) vessel rolled.

A message from the yacht’s emergency beacon was received on Wednesday at 18:30 New Zealand time, 05:00.

The rescue team, in the form of a freighter and a yacht, is expected to reach the vessel, called 'Windigo', at 0100 on Friday.

The rescue team has said no rescue would be attempted until daybreak.

A French navy aircraft has flown overhead and made contact with the crew. It confirmed the yacht is still floating.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force P3-Orion later flew above the yacht, reaming there for three hours, and dropped a life raft. A New Zealand Navy patrol boat has also been sent to assist.

Rescue team co-ordinator Keith Allen said sea conditions were becoming less severe but remained rough.

"It will be extremely uncomfortable and the people aboard are tired, but the yacht is still afloat so the correct approach is to remain onboard."
