Sheffield Don Valley Stadium Demolition Underway
Demolition of Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium has gotten underway, in a cost-saving move approved by the city council.
The stadium was built in 1990 in order to host the 1991 World Student Games.
Despite a petition containing 5,922 signatures and submitted by a group claiming to be able to run the stadium at no cost to the authority, the council backed the demolition of the site, which is expected to take six months.
Addressing the groups' offer to run the site, Councillor Isobel Bowler said: "Whilst that seemed great, they were never able to produce a plan to indicate how they would do this."
