Burglar Jailed For Four Years
A burglar who broke into the home of an 80-year-old man while he slept has been jailed for four years.
Harry Sloan, 23, of Gullon Walk, Withywood, admitted a charge of burglary and was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court today
At about 1am on 22 September 2011, the victim, who lives in warden-controlled housing in the Hartcliffe area of Bristol, woke to feel someone patting his leg.
He looked up to see a tall man stood by his bed.
Sloan, who had broken in through a window, told the victim he was the warden, but when the victim went to reach a disabled pull-cord above his head, Sloan grabbed his hands and held them down by his side.
Sloan spoke to the victim for around five minutes before leaving through the front door.
When the victim got up, he found £120 had been taken from his wallet.
He called his daughter who later discovered the panic cord and phoneline had been disconnected.
Investigating officer PC Mark Humphrey said: "This was a truly alarming incident for the victim who is extremely frail and has impaired hearing.
"The shock of waking up to find a stranger standing over your bed does not bear thinking about.
"In this case, fingerprints were recovered from the crime scene and when Sloan was arrested earlier this year for an unrelated matter, we were able to link him to this offence.
"He answered 'no comment' throughout his interview and was unable to account for why his fingerprints would be in the victim's home.
"The Priority Crime Team was set up to investigate this type of intrusive and acquisitive offending and we always aim to arrest offenders at the earliest opportunity."
