Govt Approval For Luton Airport Expansion
Plans to expand London Luton Airport have been approved by the Government.
The expansion would increase capacity at the airport to 18 million passengers a year with a potential 45,000 extra flights being scheduled.
More than 5,000 new jobs would also be created.
Plans for the airport were supported by Luton Council in December 2013, but the decision was subject to a review by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles.
Construction of the new facility would take place over three phases and will expand, modernise and remodel the terminal building, the airport said in a statement.
This would include having up to 20 security passenger screening lanes, 15 immigration passenger screening lanes, up to eight international and one domestic passenger reclaim belts, increased retail, catering, circulation and seating areas, as well as a new two-storey pier.
Work would also include dualling the road from the Holiday Inn Roundabout to a newly configured road system in front of the Central Terminal Area; constructing a new parallel taxiway to unlock capacity for an additional six million passengers a year from the existing runway, and building a new multi-storey car park.
Glyn Jones, Managing Director of the Airport, said: "We are delighted that after a thorough process, the Council can proceed to grant planning permission for London Luton.
"We see this as a real vote of confidence in the Airport and its future, underlining the determination of our new owners, Ardian and Aena, to develop and radically improve London Luton and deliver a better airport experience for our passengers in the years to come.
"The opportunities it brings for the local economy in terms of jobs and investment are significant, and Luton can now press ahead with making its local airport bigger and better, while remaining a good neighbour."
Man Robbed At Knifepoint
A man has been robbed at knifepoint in Birmingham, police have said.
It is understood two suspected robbers were filmed threatening a man with a knife over a packet of cigarettes.
The 23-year-old victim was walking along Scribers Lane, Hall Green, in the city shortly after 2pm on Monday 14 April when he was approached by two men. The men asked for a cigarette before one produced a knife and threatened the man. The robbers stole the cigarettes and fled the scene.
Police have now released images of the men they want to speak to in connection with the incident.
Detective Constable Michelle Beasley said: "This was an excessive amount of violence for very little gain and fortunately the victim was not seriously hurt.
"Our investigations have uncovered some images of two men we would like to speak to."
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.

Storm Damaged Rail Line Reopens
A section of the Cambrian Coast railway line that was left severely damaged by storms earlier this year, has reopened, after £10m was spent on repairs.
In January, sea defences and embankments from Barmouth to Harlech, Gwynedd, were destroyed by high tides and severe weather conditions. The damage forced the line to close and has left train services disrupted.
Work to repair the line on this section has now been completed and Network Rail has said trains will run again between the two towns.
A section from Machynlleth to Barmouth reopened in February, while repair work is ongoing between Harlech and Pwllheli.
