Crane Chick Gives Hope To Conservationist

A crane chick recently hatched at WWT Slimbridge in Gloucestershire has given a boost to hopes for a new generation of wild cranes in the west of Britain.

The same breeding pair, which had been hand-reared, lost a chick last year due to the weather and the hatching has been described as "incredibly exciting".

Almost 80 cranes have been reintroduced to the area over the last four years.

Britain's Longest Serving Postmistress To Retire

Esther Brauer, Britain's longest serving postmistress is to retire after 61 years.

Mrs Brauer started the post office in 1953 and ran it from her home, before moving it to her garden shed some 31 years ago.

Last year, Mrs Brauer was awarded a long service award from the Post Office.

Commonwealth Games Ticket Sales To Start Over

After the system was shut down last week due to problems, tickets for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games are set to be given new phased releases.

Team sports and ceremonies go on sale on Wednesday, athletics on Thursday and all remaining tickets on Friday.

Glasgow 2014 said demand would still be high but all systems had been tested.

ONS Figures Show Year-On-Year Increase In Retail Sales
New figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed a 1.5% drop in retail sales in January, down from a pre-Christmas boost of 2.5% but still 4.4% up on January 2013. Comparing year-on-year figures for January there was an 8% increase in non-food sales, with sales of household good increasing by 9.

Murder of 84-Year-Old And Stabbing Of 9-Year-Old Connected
Five men are currently being held in connection with the death of an elderly woman and the stabbing of a nine-year-old boy. The young boy was attacked on Monday afternoon at a skate park in Shipley, West Yorkshire, suffering injuries to his chest and arm.

18-Year-Old Jailed For Rape Of 11-Year-Old Schoolgirl
An 18-year-old man who raped an 11-year-old girl in a north London park, has been jailed for life, with a minimum term of eight years. Opemipo Jaji, of Edmonton, denied the attack in Jubilee Park, Enfield, north London in November last year. The jury had heard that Jaji had followed the girl off a bus as she made her way home from school.

First Tube Ticket Offices Close
Tube ticket offices in South Wimbledon and Queensway are to close today, the first of Transport for London's (TfL) controversial plan to shut all of its ticket offices. Staff at the two stations will be moved into ticket halls and on to platforms as TfL begin the closures.
