Public urged to do more cycling and walking
The government has announced new plans today to promote cycling and walking as healthy and convenient ways to travel.
The package of new measures unveiled includes plans to extend the National Cycle Network, which provides safer cycling routes, to hundreds of schools. The Department for Transport (DFT) will invest £500,000 in upgrading cycle provision at 200 rail stations.
Other measures include: a new web portal delivering information on where, how and why to cycle; improved training for local authority transport staff in providing for, and promoting, walking and cycling; and an amendment to the Traffic Management Bill, to make cycling safer in towns and cities
Launching 'Walking & Cycling: an Action Plan' at the annual Parliamentary Bike Ride, Transport Minister Kim Howells said: "The action plan, with more than 40 practical actions from across and beyond government, is evidence of our commitment to walking and cycling.
"It will help to provide an environment in which walking and cycling are viable, enjoyable and safe."
Jane Tomlinson MBE, who has recently completed a charity cycle tour from Rome to Leeds, said: "A good network of cycle lanes and pleasant places to walk will encourage more people and I'm pleased that action to increase walking and cycling is being taken."

Body Of British Man Found On French Beach
French authorities have reported they have recovered the body of a British man on the coast of Cote d'Azur. It is believed the man was found washed up on a beach near the village of Eze on Saturday (28 March). Officials said the man was wearing cycling clothing and a bike was found near the scene.

£77m Cycling Campaign Announced
David Cameron has announced a new £77m campaign to encourage cycling in cities and national parks across England. The funding will be divided between Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford and Norwich. New Forest, Peak District, South Downs and Dartmoor will each share a slice of £17m funding for national parks.

Jon Snow, presenter on Channel 4 News, has told MPs there is “no leadership from the state" on cycle safety. Mr Snow and Times newspaper editor James Harding called on MPs to promote cycling and provide more funding to make roads for safer for cyclists.
