Teen murderer handed down life sentence
A teenager who was convicted of murdering Lincolnshire schoolboy Luke Walmsley has been handed down a life sentence.
The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday of murdering 14-year-old Luke on November 4 last year. Mr Justice Goldring recommended that the boy serve a minimum of 12 years for the killing.
The pair had both been pupils at Birkbeck School in North Somercotes, Lincolnshire, when Luke was attacked. He died after being stabbed once through the heart.
Yesterday, the jury voted by a majority of 11-1 rejecting the teenager's defence that he had not intended to kill Luke, but had merely intended to use the knife to scare him.
During the trial the court was told that there has been a history of tension between Luke and the boy prior to the murder.
