Work to clear A85 landslides underway
A clear-up project has begun in central Scotland to remove huge landslides that blocked the A85 in Glen Ogle north of Lochearnhead.
Yesterday, following hours of torrential rain in the area, 57 motorists were cut off as a landslip sent thousands of tonnes of mud and loose rock crashing onto the roadway. As the drivers tried to turn their vehicles round they found that a second landslide had cut off the road in both directions.
RAF and Royal Navy helicopters assisted with the rescue operation to airlift the stranded motorists to safety.
The A85 just north of Lochearnhead is expected to remain closed until the roadway has been cleared and any threat of remaining loose debris above the road causing further landslides is fully assessed by engineers.
One emergency response vehicle belonging to BEAR Scotland, the company responsible for maintaining the trunk road network in the region, was swept off the road into a gorge, but no-one was injured as rescuers worked to reach the stranded people.
Many of those rescued were taken to nearby Lochearnhead village, and police have been checking the area throughout the night, but there are not thought to be any casualties and no-one has been reported missing following the incident.
Serious flooding is also reported to have closed a section of the A84 on Thursday.

Five die in Leicestershire house fire
Five people, all thought to be from the same family, have died in a house fire in Leicester, it has been reported today. Around 30 firemen from the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service attended the blaze at around 5am this morning.

Body Found At Selby Swing Bridge
Police have appealed for information following the discovery of a body in the river below Selby Swing Bridge, Selby. Police were called to the scene just before 15:30 when a member of the reported spotting body in the water below the bridge. A rescue boat was launched and the body recovered.

Appeal For Witnesses To Serious Road Accident
North Wales Police have appealed for witnesses to a serious road accident on Sunday. A woman has been left with "significant injuries" after two vehicles crashed on the B4421 between Newborough and Llangaffo at about 20:00 on Sunday. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number, 101.

Reward Offered In 2010 Murder Of 16-Year-Old
A reward of £20,000 has been offered for information leading to a conviction for the 2010 murder of 16-year-old Samuel Adelagun in Plaistow. Police have renewed their appeal on the murder of the teenager and the attempted murder of his 15-year-old friend on Saturday, 23 October 2010.
