Jane Tomlinson to compete in NY marathon
Fundraising cancer sufferer Jane Tomlinson has announced that she will compete in the New York Marathon next month.
Mrs Tomlinson, 41, had announced that she was retiring from charity work last year, having raised over £1 million so far. However, she has now announced plans to participate in more charity events over the next year, in a bid to raise a further £1 million for charity.
The 26-mile New York Marathon, which takes place on November 6, will be the fourth marathon that Jane has competed in, since being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer five years ago.
Since then, she has completed numerous events for charity including the Great North Run in Newcastle and the London Marathon and competed in the London Triathlon. She also cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End in 2003 and completed a 2000 mile, five-week tandem bike ride from Rome to Leeds last year.
Jane said that training for next month’s marathon had been the hardest event she had yet attempted, as she had only 12 weeks to prepare and was beginning from a low level of fitness, following a course of chemotherapy earlier in this year. She has also suffered a broken ankle in training and has a heart condition to contend with as well.
She said: “We thought we could manage one more year and raise as much money as we can with the idea that if we did that, we would not do anything further because it is such a tiring thing to do.
“We could not go on doing it indefinitely.”
Jane was honoured in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards in 2002 and was also awarded with a MBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list in 2003 for her achievements.
