Arrests made in anti-terror raids
Seven people are being held following a series of early morning raids carried out by anti-terrorist police across the UK on Wednesday.
Eighteen addresses were raided in Manchester, Merseyside, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and London.
Nine people were initially arrested - eight in Manchester and one in Merseyside. However, two people have since been released.
The operation, which is being led by Greater Manchester Police, also involved West Midlands, Cleveland, Merseyside and the Metropolitan police forces. It was still continuing on Wednesday afternoon.
The raids are understood to have been in connection with terrorism abroad, most probably in Iraq.
Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Michael Todd stressed that there no direct threat of an attack on the UK. He said that the operation was the result of an intelligence-gathering investigation which had been ongoing for at least a year.
