Gunman 'held on to boy' in Manchester shooting

A masked gunman held on to a teenage boy as he shot him five times in a street in Manchester, police have revealed.

The 15-year-old was on Billing Avenue in Ardwick with a number of other teenagers around 11:50pm on Saturday night when a silver car, containing four or five people, pulled up alongside them.

A masked man got out out of the car, as someone inside the vehicle shouted "That's him!". The gunman grabbed the 15-year-old and shot him a number of times while still holding on to him.

The teenager suffered five gunshot wounds to his chest, back, groin, thigh and buttock. A 13-year-old boy was also shot in the leg during the attack.

Both boys remain in hospital under armed guard. Both are in a stable condition.

The gunman is described as being around 6ft tall and of muscular build. He was wearing dark clothing and a balaclava.

The 15-year-old's family have appealed for information about the shooting. His grandmother and mother issued a plea to the local community which said: "We have both been devastated by what happened. The local community have been so supportive since and we want to thank for them for that.

"Lots of people have been helping the police to piece together what happened but we know that there is someone out there who knows exactly what took place and what's behind it.

"I'd ask them to imagine seeing someone they love lying in a hospital bed, littered with bullet holes. How would they feel?

"We know that he is lucky to be alive. He knows that too. But we can see that he is frightened. He doesn't want to see the news: it brings it all back to him."

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Antrobus, who is leading the investigation, said: "I believe that the victim was the intended target but we are still working to establish why he was picked out by these men.

"I know that the key to this lies in the local community. I am trying to piece together a jigsaw of events. I know someone in the community has the missing pieces. I am asking them to please come forward in confidence.

"In particular, I am keen to trace anyone who may have seen the silver car which the gunman got out of. It was a silver 4-door hatchback, similar in style to a Ford Focus. We have seized CCTV from the immediate area surrounding the shooting and are optimistic that the car has been captured on some of it."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Longsight Incident Room on: 0161 856 4343 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on: 0800 555 111.
