Man arrested following M6 crash

A German man has been arrested following a crash in Staffordshire in which four people have been killed.

The 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after the incident, which happened at around 19.40 BST on Sunday at Junction 11a on the M6, at Great Saredon, near Birmingham.

Four people lost their lives in the multiple pile-up, in which a number of people had to be cut free from their vehicles by the fire service.

Two men, aged 30 and 52, who were travelling in a Ford Mondeo and a man and a woman in a Renault Clio were killed, while a number of people were taken to hospital suffering from suspected spinal injuries. A lorry driver was also treated for whiplash.

A Highways Agency spokesperson said: "From our viewpoint, despite being at the scene within eight minutes, sadly it was to no avail for those four people. We would ask anyone who knows anything to come forward."
