Investigation launched following football crossbow attack

Police have launched an investigation after a football match was halted due to a crossbow arrow being fired onto the pitch.

The arrow was fired onto the pitch at Woodley Sports Centre on Lambeth Groove in Woodley, Stockport, during a Unibond First Division game between Woodley Sports and Alsager Town.

It is believed that the arrow was fired from outside the front of the ground from the direction of the Mill Lane estate.

No-one was hit by the arrow and there were no injuries.

A spokesperson for Woodley Sports and Football Club condemned the "reckless stupidity" of the act.

They said: "The consequences of this action could have been devastating. We, the club, find this contemptible."

The club has offered a reward of £500, rising to £1,500 for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Stockport Police on: 0161 856 9986 or Crimstoppers on: 0800 555 111.
