Weather warning issued for motorists

Severe weather is expected to affect road travel, the Highways Agency has warned.

Heavy rain will be accompanied by strong winds gusting up to 70mph over exposed stretches of road, the agency warned, while sudden cross winds and heavy rain could also pose a risk, with spray adding to the difficulties.

The Met Office has predicted a spell of strong winds and heavy rain through tonight, with the rain spreading from western parts of England this afternoon and sweeping across the rest of the country during the night.

The heaviest rain is expected on upland areas in the west.

The Highways Agency is advising all road users, including motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles to take extra care on the roads and to plan their journeys carefully.

Drivers are advised to leave plenty of room between vehicles in these conditions and are advised to use headlights, as well as ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually in heavy rain.
