Bridgend Death Inquest Opens

An inquest into the death of a young man in Bridgend has opened and adjourned.

Rhys Lloyd Davies, 23, was found hanged on Saturday in the bedroom of his family home in Maes Glas, Bettws on August 9.

The inquest, which opened in Brackla Tabernacle Church, heard that the cause of death was asphyxiation, due to a ligature about the neck.

Coroner's officer Mark Adams said in a statement: "On Friday, August 8, Rhys was socialising with friends. He then went back to a friend's house before leaving at 2.45am.

"Rhys was discovered by his family at 11.20am the following morning. It appears he had hanged himself in his bedroom."

More than 40 of his friends have posted tributes on his Facebook site.

It is understood that Mr Davies, a part-time DJ, also worked behind the bar at the Bettws Social Club in the village and was to go on holiday to Benidorm this week.

The coroner for Bridgend, Philip Walters, has adjourned the inquest for further reports and will resume it at a later date.

The death marks the fourth in the Bettws area since April, but South Wales Police do not believe they are linked.

Since the beginning of 2007, 22 other young people from the county have apparently taken their own lives.
