Arrests follow discovery of bomb in County Tyrone
Dissident republicans are being linked to a 130lb bomb defused by army bomb disposal experts in County Tyrone.
The bomb, consisting of home made explosive hidden in a creamery can, was found during a search of property at Glenaness Road, Sixmilecross, at around 8.05pm on Tuesday October 16. Army technical officers moved in to defuse the device on Wednesday morning.
A husband and wife were arrested when police moved in to seize the device near Omagh, County Tyrone, and another man and woman were arrested in follow up searches in the Newtownbutler area of County Fermanagh.
More terrorist equipment near Sixmilecross was also recovered when police examined the area on Wednesday morning.
Security chiefs believe republicans opposed to the peace process were planning an attack in the wake of mounting pressure on the IRA to start decommissioning their weapons.
The West Tyrone SDLP member at the Northern Ireland Assembly, Joe Byrne, who lives in Omagh, said he was “deeply disturbed”. He said: “It is a very worrying development at this time when virtually everyone is expecting movement on decommissioning to take place. Any terrorist activity involving potentially deadly bombing devices like the one discovered outside Sixmilecross must be totally condemned with conviction.”
Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty said: “Last night’s bomb outside Sixmilecross show us clearly there are still people who are opposed to the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement. It is incumbent on all of us in political leadership to make it clear that politics can work and deliver change.” (AMcE)

Police have arrested two men as part of investigations into an attempted bomb attack on officers in Strabane in County Tyrone. Officers were lured to the Ballycolman estate on 23 October to investigate a report that a bomb had been thrown at a police patrol vehicle the night before.

Security alert in County Tyrone ends
A security alert in County Tyrone has ended. A blast bomb type device was discovered in the front garden of a house in the Strahulter Road area of Newtownstewart after searches by PSNI officers. Army Technical Officers were tasked to the scene and a controlled explosion was carried out on the device.

A number of people have escaped injury after a series of gun and pipe bomb attacks on their homes in County Antrim. A ten-year-old boy escaped in jury after shots were fired into a house at Mounthill Drive in Cloughmills, County Antrim.

Bomb Alert Follows Arrests In County Tyrone
Two men have been arrested and bomb disposal experts called to the scene after police stopped a van that was travelling through Fintona in County Tyrone this morning. Officers stopped the van on Corbally Road and detained the men at about 02:00 in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Residents Evacuated Following Security Alert
A number of residents have been evacuated from their homes in Lurgan, County Armagh, following a security alert. Police were alerted that a suspect device was left on a railway line, at around 1.30am this morning. Army bomb experts have been tasked, and train services have also been stopped. Bells Row and the Lake Street areas have been closed.
