Snow Closes Schools Throughout NI

Over 200 schools have closed due to the heavy snow across Northern Ireland.

The Department of Infrastructure confirmed conditions are extremely difficult, however gritters have worked throughout the night and are continuing to work today, 17 January.

Motorists have been advised to only travel if it is absolutely necessary and further snow and ice is expected today.

Translink services have now resumed, however some may be disrupted or cancelled.

A yellow weather warning remains in place until 6pm.

Heavy snow showers affect whole of NI
Heavy snow showers have affected many parts of Northern Ireland overnight and there is a Met Office severe weather warning in force. Snow depths ranged from one inch to six inches with many schools closing for the day because of the dangerous conditions.

Snow Warning Upgraded To Amber
The Met Office has upgraded its latest weather warning for Northern Ireland. On Tuesday, the forecaster issued a 'yellow' alert for snow which is in place until 5pm today. This will then be replaced by an 'amber' alert as snow and icy conditions are expected to affect much of the region.

Travel Disruption Across NI After Further Snowfall Overnight
Snow and ice across Northern Ireland has caused traffic chaos this morning, 23 January. Motorists have been urged to allow extra time for their journeys, as the first snowfall of winter blanketed the country on Tuesday evening.
