Car components factory to shut with loss of 550 jobs
A car components factory in east Belfast has announced it is to close with the loss of 550 jobs.
Staff at the Dundonald plant of Japanese owned TK-ECC, formerly known as Fisher Body, were informed of the shock decision by management when they turned up for work at 9am on Friday morning.
While trade union representatives will meet with factory managers on Monday to discuss the situation, it is understood that all the jobs at the firm will go in the next few weeks.
The decision comes just a year after the company announced it was laying off 300 workers at the plant.
The plant, which at one time was one of the biggest employers in east Belfast with a workforce of more than 800, makes seatbelts for a range of car manufacturers, including Toyota, Honda and Vauxhall.
However, a downturn in the motor industry has been blamed for today's decision.

Up to 90 jobs could be lost at a County Antrim car components factory, it has emerged. Montupet management met with union representatives yesterday, after it was announced that the company would stop the production of alloy wheels at the Belfast plant due to a drop of around 25% in sales over the last few years.

Around 400 jobs are likely to be created at aerospace company Shorts after parent company Bombardier decided to build part of its new corporate jet in Belfast. The decision to build the fuselage of the new plane, a Learjet, at Shorts was announced yesterday.

300 jobs could go at east Belfast manufacturer
It has been reported that nearly 300 workers are to be made redundant at a seatbelt manufacturing plant in east Belfast. Staff at the European Components Corporation factory in Dundonald were told of the decision earlier today. The majority of jobs losses will be phased in between March to August.
