DfI Reaffirms Commitment To Downpatrick Flood Alleviation
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Downpatrick community through strategic flood alleviation efforts.
Representatives from DfI's Rivers Directorate met with the Downpatrick Regeneration Group to provide an update on long-term capital interventions and operational measures.
The update follows the publication of a feasibility study earlier this year, which was commissioned after the severe flooding in Downpatrick in November 2023. The study identified viable solutions to protect over 100 properties, and further work is now underway to develop a business case for a potential flood alleviation scheme. The DfI is also conducting a detailed assessment to determine the economic feasibility of the preferred option.
The Department continues to deliver targeted watercourse maintenance in the area and provides emergency support in line with civil contingency frameworks. At the meeting, DfI officials also addressed misconceptions around dredging and barrier removal, with detailed flood modelling confirming these would not reduce flood risk.
Community engagement remains central to the DfI's approach. In November 2024, the Downpatrick Regional Community Resilience Group (RCRG) was established, bringing together local businesses, the Council, and government agencies to strengthen preparedness and response.

Police are treating a fire at a 5G mast in the Annadale Embankment area of south Belfast as arson. Officers, along with the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, attended the scene shortly after 10.15pm on Wednesday, 13 August, following a report that the mast was alight.
