Omagh bomb suspect formally charged with 29 murders

A Co Armagh man has been formally charged with the murders of 29 people in the 1998 Omagh bombing.

Sean Gerard Hoey, 35, from Jonesborough, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Thursday and stood during the 10 minute hearing during which he was also charged with possessing explosives and causing an explosion.

The defence lawyer was granted a request to have the trial referred to Belfast Crown Court, where Mr Hoey is expected to appear next Tuesday via video link from Maghaberry Prison.

Last week Mr Hoey appeared before court to hear he would face 61 new charges linked to the bombing as well as today’s 29 charges of murder.

Twenty-nine people were killed and hundreds injured in the car bomb attack in the Co Tyrone town on 15 August 1998.

The bombing, which was later claimed by dissident republican paramilitary group the Real IRA, was the worst single atrocity in the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’.
